Easter Chick Egg Cosies

With Springtime and Easter just around the corner how
about hooking up some little egg cosies ?

This pattern works for either the healthy dippy egg sort of eggs,
or the not quite so healthy but equally yummy chocolaty sort of eggs  !

For my egg cosies I used Rico Baby Cotton Soft as this works up to give a lovely defined texture,
that can also be pooped in the wash if needs be.
I used: 1 x ball of Yellow 19 for the body, wings and legs of the chicks
and 1 x ball each of the colours Candy Pink 30, Lemon 28 and Mint 31
 for the bunny ear hats.

You will also need some small amounts of ribbon for decoration
and either felt or scraps of soft leather for the beaks.
I used 4mm safety eyes for my chicks but black embroidery thread
or felt would work just as well.

The pattern for the Egg Cup Cosy and the chocolate egg cosy are both exactly the same, with the difference simply being that the egg cup cosy is worked with a larger sized hook.
For the egg cup size you will need a size 4.0mm hook for the body and a size 4.5mm hook for the hat.
For the smaller chocolate egg cosy you will need a size 3.5mm hook for the body and a size 4.00mm hook for the hat.
To make the chick:

Round 1: Begin by making a Magic Circle and then work 8 DC in to the ring.
Round 2: Work 2 DC in to each stitch from the first round, 16 sts.
Round 3: Work 1 DC in to the first stitch , and then work 2 DC in to the next stitch. Repeat all the way around, 24sts.
Rounds 4, 5 and 6: Work a round of 24 DC.
Round 7: Work 1 DC in to each of the first three stitches, and then work 2DC in to the next stitch. Repeat this all the way around, 30sts.
Rounds 8 to 14:  Work a round of 30 DC.
Round 15: For the final round you are going to work a picot edge to look like fluffy feathers. Work the picot as follows: Sl ST in to the next stitch,* Sl St in to the next stitch and then chain 2. SL St back into the first loop of the chain, Sl St in to the next stitch.* Repeat from * to * all the way around the bottom of the egg cosy and Sl St to join at the end of the round. To not cut your yarn.

To make the legs:  Work a chain of 14, starting in the 2nd chain from the hook, Sl ST back 3 stitches along the chain. Chain 4 and starting in the 2nd chain from the hook Sl ST back 3 stitches, Chain 4 and starting in the 2nd chain from the hook Sl ST back 3 stitches.

You should now have the three little claws that will make up the chick’s foot. Sl St back into the the bottom of the long chain to ‘close’ the foot and then Sl St back along the leg chain. Sl St back to join to the body, finish off and cut yarn, leaving a tail long enough to sew in your ends.
Rejoin your yarn a few stitches around from the first leg and make another leg exactly the same as the first. Sl St back to the body, finish off and sew in the ends.

The next stage is to add the eyes either by sewing them on with embroidery thread or black felt, or by attaching toy safety eyes. I attached mine approx. 6 rounds down , with approx. 5 stitches between them.
For the beak cut a small diamond shape out of either soft leather or felt and sew on to the chick between the eyes.

To make the wings: Make 2.
Round 1: Make a Magic Ring and work 4 DC in to the ring.
Round 2: work 1 DC in to the first stitch, followed by 2 DC in to the second stitch. Repeat all the way around, 6 sts.
Round 3: Work 1 DC in to each of the first two stitches, followed by 2DC in to the next stitch. Repeat all the way around, 8sts.
Round 4: Work 1 DC in to each of the first three stitches, followed by 2DC in to the next stitch. Repeat all the way around, 10sts
Rounds 5 to 8: Work a round of 10 DC. Finish off, leaving a long end to sew the wings to the chick.

To make the hat:
Round 1: Begin by making a Magic Circle and then work 8 DC in to the ring.
Round 2: Work 2 DC in to each stitch from the first round, 16 sts.
Round 3: Work 1 DC in to the first stitch , and then work 2 DC in to the next stitch. Repeat all the way around, 24sts.
Rounds 4 and 5: Work a round of 24 DC.
Round 6: Work 1 DC in to each of the first three stitches, and then work 2DC in to the next stitch. Repeat this all the way around, 30sts.
Rounds 7 to 9: Work a round of 30 DC. Finish off, leaving a long enough end to sew the hat to the chick.
To make the Bunny Ears: Make 2.
Round 1: Work a Magic Ring and work 6 DC in to the ring.
Round 2: Work 1 DC in to the first stitch , and then work 2 DC in to the next stitch. Repeat all the way around, 9sts.
Rounds 3 to 12: Work a round of 9 DC. Finish off leaving a tail ling enough to stitch the ears to the hat.
To complete your chick sew the ears to the hat, place the hat on to the chick and stitch in place at the back.
Sew the wings on to the chick at each side.
